Skittles- Tip-i-cal-ly
I didn’t have a clue who Skittles was at the start of this year. I probably should have done but occasionally I’m unintentionally ignorant. So with no clue I started seeing alot of hype about this ‘Tip-i-cal-ly’ tune when the video came out. ‘I better check it out- some important heads are posting it online’. I’m glad I did.
The first thing that hits me is this guy’s flow. It’s very unique- fast but coherent, tight rhyming and blatantly mancunian. There’s no pandering to London or the USA here. The lyrics and video are injected with humour, nothing is too serious (save that for other tracks). It’s gripping, catchy and you can’t help but feel like a little skank while listening to it. Skittle’s has since gone onto even bigger things with new single ‘Dot2Dot’ and a collaboration with Hospital Records’ Camo and Krooked on their debut album, and I struggle to think of an MC more deserving.
If you get the chance to see him with his live band setup please jump at it- they always put on a storming show and really link up with the crowd. They’re playing Hit & Run vs Riot Jazz tomorrow (Dec 12th) if you read this in time- well worth a shout!
