Until maybe a week or two ago, anyone into their dark drum and bass knew about knew about Dub Phizix, his releases on labels such as Ingredients, Dispatch and Soul:R have gained him a growing reputation. In a short time everyone has heard his name, thanks to a tune called Marka. A deep & tribal collaboration between himself and Skeptical, combined with a striking vocal from Broke n £nglish’s Strategy has produced one of the most hyped bass music releases I have ever seen, complete with its own ‘Christmas Number 1’ campaign.
In short, it is a monster of a tune.
My own involvement here comes from a recent promo shoot I did with Mr Dub Phizix. To celebrate his signing to the ESR agency, we set out on a freezing Mancunian evening to get him some fresh promo pictures. I did say it was freezing yeh? Because it was. Really fucking freezing!
So, like Captain Scott, into the cold we went, venturing out from Chorlton to Old Trafford, and up to Hulme on the edge of town. I’ll give my man some major credit for braving the arctic conditions in just a t-shirt at times. We got the job done eventually, with numb hands and faces, injecting a bit of colour but maintaining the darkness so prevalent in his music- just what the doctor ordered!
A promo shoot for Dub Phizix in Manchester. November 2011. Shot in Hulme, Old Trafford and Manchester City Centre.
Here’s to a Marka Christmas! (check the amazing video below, make sure your sub is on full though, yeh?)
